Signs Your Transmission Is Failing

As you drive your car, you expect it to respond to you. When turning the steering wheel to the left, you expect your wheels to turn in that direction. When pressing the accelerator, you expect your vehicle to speed up proportionately. It can be frightening and dangerous when your car does something unexpected, seeming to have a mind of its own. If your vehicle hesitates when you shift gears, or if it ever slips gears, your transmission needs to be inspected. Here are a few signs of a failing transmission.

Check Engine Light

One of the most common signs of transmission trouble is the check engine light coming on. Keep in mind that this light can be caused by any number of issues, including a loose fuel cap. Many drivers ignore the light, but it can also be the first warning of transmission problems. A diagnostic test can find the source of that check engine light.

Slipping Gears

While driving down the road, a failing transmission may suddenly shift from drive to neutral, causing your vehicle to quickly lose speed. If this ever occurs, remain calm and try to safely maneuver your vehicle away from traffic. You may be able to stop and restart your car to get it moving again, but as much as possible, avoid driving under those dangerous conditions. Make it a priority to have your transmission checked.

Burning Smell

Never ignore a burning smell coming from your vehicle. It could be that your transmission fluid levels are low or dirty. Check your fluids and top off the levels as needed. If you continue to drive with low transmission fluid, you could burn out your transmission and wind up with expensive repairs.

Shaking or Hesitating

Another sign of transmission trouble is your car shaking or hesitating when you change gears. Let’s say you’re backing out of a parking spot, and you shift from reverse to drive. You press the accelerator, but your car takes a second or two to respond. The problem could just be low transmission fluid levels, but you should have your vehicle inspected and serviced as soon as possible to avoid any further damage.
