Why Do Your Tires Have Uneven Tread Wear?

Your tires need regular maintenance in order to have the best shot at lasting for their full lifespan. The problem is that it’s easy to forget about some of these tire maintenance services unless you’ve got a plan in place. Choisser Automotive Services can help you to keep up with all of these different types of tire maintenance.

Unbalanced Wheels

Wheel balancing ensures that your tires and wheels have the same weight all the way around. When they’re not balanced properly, it’s like a washing machine that has an off-balance load. The tire hits the road unevenly, and that means that you’re losing more tread on one side of the tire than on the other. This can also give you some big problems with handling and can eventually cause issues in your car’s suspension system. Every time that you get new tires, you should make sure they’re properly balanced to start out.

Misaligned Wheels

Wheel alignments are more important for proper tread wear than most car owners realize. When the wheels are out of alignment, the tires hit the road off-kilter, which just chews up the tread. Your car’s wheels can be tilted incorrectly from top to bottom and from side to side. That means that there’s a lot that can go wrong for your car when it comes to wheel alignment. Even worse, just normal driving can knock your car’s wheels right out of alignment. But bigger issues, like hitting a speed bump too hard or getting surprised by a pothole, can make the alignment issue even worse.

Incorrect Inflation

Improper tire inflation causes a wealth of problems ranging from poor gas mileage all the way to uneven tread wear. Relying solely on your car’s TPMS monitoring system to let you know the air pressure in your tires can be a big problem. It’s worth taking a few minutes every couple of weeks to verify the correct air pressure is in each tire. If you’re not sure what that exact air pressure should be, double-check the car’s owner’s manual for details. There’s also a sticker on the inside of the driver’s side door that helps you find that information quickly.
