Why Did My Power Steering Stop Working?

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to turn your steering wheel? Most days you may not think anything of it, but if your power steering goes out, you’ll definitely notice the difference. Though you can still drive the car, it may be somewhat challenging.

The question is, Why isn’t your power-steering working?

Your Power Steering Fluid Has Leaked Out

If your vehicle takes power steering fluid, then you need to make sure it has enough to function effectively. Without ample power steering fluid, the pump that needs the fluid will stop working. It can also potentially wear out a lot faster and even possibly overheat. If this happens, then you will most likely have to replace the pump entirely.

Not All Cars Take Power Steering Fluid

Some cars use an electrical power steering system that doesn’t need any fluid. Though it usually doesn’t need as much maintenance as hydraulic systems, that doesn’t mean that it won’t ever encounter problems. Sometimes the fuses can go out and need to be replaced. If you’re not sure which kind of system your car has, bring it into our shop and we can help you figure it out.

It is also important to note that whenever a suspension alignment is performed, the steering angle sensor must be reset. If this is not done, there will be problems with the traction control system, the vehicle stability assist, the anti-lock brakes, and the lane-keeping assistance systems. Resetting the sensor is absolutely vital, but don’t worry; we’ve got you covered.

A Broken Belt Will Lead to Big Problems

Along with your pump and the fluid it needs to function, there will be a belt involved that helps power the pump. If that belt is damaged or snaps entirely, then the pump is going to suffer for it. On the bright side, you will notice immediately when this happens because the power steering will fail suddenly, potentially while you are driving.

What Should You Do When your Power Steering Goes Out?

If your power steering fails while you are driving, the most important thing you need to do is remain calm. You will still be able to steer the vehicle, it’s just going to be more difficult. If you don’t feel safe, calmly pull over and call a company like AAA to help you if you cannot get to an auto shop.
